Abstract

The choice of medical specialty is a complex decision for the student, influenced by several factors, and important for the students' professional career, but also for the country's health system. Thus, this research seeks to understand which factors influence the decision to choose the subspecialty during medical graduation. The research was carried out through a quantitative approach, in the Survey style, descriptive, by a randomized survey, developed through an online questionnaire, in which students from the 1st to the 6th year of Medical Schools of private and public character participated. The questionnaire was built on 23 questions related to demographic aspects, intended specialty, influence of remuneration and quality of life, in addition to the desired location for the experience of medical residency. Data were analysed using PRISM software for Windows. 232 participants answered the questionnaire, 121 from the basic cycle, 96 from the clinical cycle and 15 from the internship. The most chosen specialty was General Surgery, followed by Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Anaesthesiology and Family and Community Medicine. Specialties such as Pediatric Surgery, Dermatology, Pediatrics, Family and Community Medicine and Orthopaedics have a high gender influence, while the Anaesthesiology and Ophthalmology specialties stood out for being specialties with the highest expected financial return.
